forgetmenot keeps the stories of your family: you record or write them, they are written down and put in order, and you can read, explore and download them. The stories are yours. We use them only to provide this service to you.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address and a protected form of your password | So that you can sign in. |
| The texts you add, what is written down from your recordings and read from your documents, and the pictures you add of people | This is the service: keeping your stories. |
| A recording or a document itself, only until it has been written down or read | It is sent to our systems to be turned into text and removed from them as soon as that is done. We do not keep documents. Recordings are kept only on the plan "No time to lose", in your account, so that you can listen to them again; you can delete each one with its story. On the other plans a recording is removed once it has been written down. |
| The people, places, events and facts found in your stories, and a log of the changes made to them | To show the family tree, the timeline and to answer your questions, and so that every change can be traced and undone. |
| For each person you record: the day you confirmed that they agreed to be recorded | So that this is asked once, before the first recording, and can be shown later. |
| How much you have used (number of stories, questions per month, requests per day) | To apply the limits of your plan and to prevent misuse. |
| When something fails in the app: what failed (for example "a recording could not be kept"), one short line of the error, the browser and the version of the app. Never the content of a story. Kept for 90 days. | To find and fix problems. |
| Your plan, and for a subscription: its state, its end date and the customer number at our payment provider | To give you what you pay for. We never receive your card details. |
We do not use cookies, tracking or advertising. Your browser keeps these things for the app:
Family stories often contain personal details about other people, including sensitive ones such as health or religion. You decide what you record and add. Please record people only with their agreement, and add details about living people only if you may share them.
| Service | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, file storage and sign-in | European Union (Ireland) |
| Google (Gemini API) | Writing down recordings, reading documents, putting stories in order, answering your questions. The content of the story concerned is sent for this purpose. | European Union and United States. Google uses what is sent only to answer the request, not to train its models (paid service). |
| Stripe | Payment for subscriptions. Stripe receives your email address and your payment details; we never see your card number. | European Union (Ireland) and United States |
| Vercel | Delivering the app to your browser. Vercel sees the address of your device (IP address) and which files were requested, never your stories. | United States and the region nearest to you |
| Resend | Sending the emails about your account: confirming your address, choosing a new password, changing your address. Resend receives your email address and the email itself, never your stories. | Sent from the European Union (Ireland); records of what was sent are kept in the United States |
Each of these services processes the data on our behalf and under a contract that binds it to our instructions (a data processing agreement). We are based in Switzerland, which the European Union recognises as a country with adequate data protection. Where data goes to the United States, it goes to companies certified under the EU–US and Swiss–US Data Privacy Framework, or is covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
We handle your data under the Swiss Data Protection Act and, where it applies to you, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
No decision about you is made by a machine alone in a way that has legal or similarly serious effects.
Your stories stay until you delete them. You can delete a single story at any time (the story page, "Delete this story"). It then waits in the trash for 30 days, where you can restore it, and is deleted for good after that, or at once if you choose "Delete for good" in the trash. You can also delete your whole account with everything in it (Account, "Delete my account"). Deleting for good removes the texts and pictures from our systems, including the quotes from the story that were kept in the change log. Backups of the database are kept for up to 7 days; what you deleted disappears from them within that time. Records of payments are kept for 10 years, as Swiss law requires, by us and by Stripe.
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we tell you by email before the change applies.
